Part 9 Timeline of Horatio James
- 1839 – Born St Andrews, Hertfordshire
- 1841 – Living in St Andrews, Hertfordshire
- 1851 – Living at 7 Bolton Terrace, Newington. With his family -Nathan James head married 49, attorneys clerk, Sarah wife 42, Jane Sedgwick daughter single 18 teacher of music, Henry son 16 musician, Horatio son 11, scholar, Nathan Smith son 9, scholar, Isabella daughter 7, scholar.
- 1859 – 29th June joined HMS Edgar, signed up for 10 years naval service as an ordinary seaman.
- 1861 Census - Horatio listed on board HMS Edgar
Nathan James living at 6 Devonshire Street, Holborn, lodging with Frances Cook
- 1863/6 – took part in the Simonosaki Campaign in japan. Made rank of able seaman in 1864.
- 1869 Leaves the Royal Navy after ten years service.
- 1871 Census – Horatio James living at home in Chapel Street, Gosport, Hants. He’s living at home with his wife Mary Ann and their children George and Mary Jane. He is still listed as seaman RN on board the HMS Duke of Wellington. At this time the Wellington was the guardian of the port firing salutes for visiting dignitaries
- 1873/4 on HMS Hector based in Southampton Water. Horace worked for the Coast Guard until his ship was put in dock for re-fit in july 1874.
- 1874 After HMS Hector he briefly rejoined HMS Duke of Wellington before joining the crew of HMS Vigilant in the September. Again Horace was headed to the far east.
- 1875 In February the Vigilant now part of the China Station, took Sir Andrew Clarke, on an important diplomatic mission to Bangkok, to help settle a dispute between two princes. Later in the year Horace briefly joined HMS Charybdis, before later rejoining the Vigilant.
- 1876 His ship HMS Vigilant was at Chefoo (now Yantai), China with Sir Thomas Wade, the British Minister at Pekin, and Vice-Admiral Ryder
- 1878 He was on HMS Victor Emanuel in Hong Kong. This ship was used as a hospital and receiving ship. Was he ill?
- 1878 between Feb and April on HMS Tamar a troop ship which serviced Africa and the far east. His journey home.
- 1878/79 Back onboard the Duke of Wellington in the UK. He was pensioned form the Navy on December.
- 1880 – He moved to Burton upon Trent to work as a labourer on the railways. He was staying with his sister. While in Burton he sadly died of pleuro-pneumonia aged 42 in Burton on Trent.
